At Sir Thomas Boughey Academy, we recognise that the transition to secondary school is a significant milestone for both students and their families. Rooted in our ethos of belonging, we are committed to ensuring that every child feels welcomed, supported, and inspired from the very beginning of their journey with us.
To help ease this transition, we offer a comprehensive induction programme designed to make the move to secondary school a positive and successful experience. This includes a series of events such as transition days, guided tours for parents and children, open evenings, and new intake mornings. These opportunities allow students to become familiar with our academy environment, meet key staff, and begin building relationships with their peers.
We are proud of the strong and purposeful partnerships we have developed with our local primary schools over many years. These connections enable us to create a seamless and supportive transition process that is both meaningful and rewarding for all involved.
Every element of our transition programme is carefully planned to ensure that your child begins their time at Sir Thomas Boughey with confidence and enthusiasm. We look forward to welcoming you into our school community and sharing in the exciting journey ahead.
We have established links with our local primary schools through our extensive primary liaison offer. Throughout Year 5, primary students take a glimpse into life at Sir Thomas Boughey with experiences that include Mrs Shoreman, Mr Warriner and former pupils visiting the Primary School to deliver an assembly about life at Sir Thomas Boughey. Year 5 and 6 pupils also have the opportunity to visit Sir Thomas Boughey and experience activities within the school, such as Science practicals.
Once a place is offered, our Year 7 students receive reflective letters from our Year 11 Senior Student Leadership Team, who share their own experiences of starting secondary school, writing a letter to their Year 7 self, telling them about their experience at Sir Thomas Boughey, offering reassurance and advice, whilst reflecting on how they felt five years ago when they were in the same position. In addition to this letter, our new students receive a personalised post card from a Year 7 student welcoming them to the Boughey community.
These messages help Year 6 pupils feel supported and begin building connections with older students as they prepare to join our caring school community.
Alongside excellence in teaching and learning, we ensure every student feels safe, supported, and valued through our dedicated student services team, who provide students with trusted adults they can turn to for help, guidance, and encouragement.
We uphold high standards through a culture of kindness, respect and community spirit. While we recognise that students may occasionally make mistakes, we focus on helping them learn, grow, and make things right—with the support of both staff and parents.

Our commitment to excellence begins before students even arrive in September of Year 7 with our transition team visiting every Year 6 pupil joining us, gathering key information to ensure a smooth and successful start to Year 7. This includes academic data in English and Maths, attendance, behaviour and attitude to learning, any interventions received, family circumstances, and grouping recommendations from primary colleagues.
This personalised approach allows our teachers to plan effectively from day one, ensuring every student is supported to thrive in our high-expectation, high-support environment.
We see transition days as a vital opportunity to give students and their families a confident and positive introduction to life at Sir Thomas Boughey.
Year 6 students are invited to spend two days with us, helping them feel fully prepared for the start of secondary school in September. During the visit, students meet key staff, explore the school site, take part in a range of lessons, and begin forming friendships with their future Year 7 peers.
This experience gives each child a clear sense of what it means to be part of our school community. It’s also a chance to ease any nerves and answer questions ahead of the new term.
To further support the leap from primary to secondary, we also invite students and their parents or carers to attend our transition evening. This event is designed to strengthen the partnership between home and school as we work together to unlock each child’s academic and personal potential. This evening is an informative event that supports a seamless start in September.
