Key Stage 3 overview

Geography at KS3 covers the key skills that will be used at KS4. We develop map skills by using OS, world and UK maps; construct and describe graphs; label and annotate images; analyse and evaluate different schemes/political polices used in different countries around the world and practise fieldwork techniques such as data presentation and risk assessment.

These skills are applied to a wide range of assessments throughout KS3. The topics covered are China, Rivers, Settlement, Antarctica, Farming, Africa and Globalisation.

Key Stage 4 overview

Geography at KS4 follows the AQA Geography syllabus. There are three papers:

Paper 1 (Physical): Coasts, Rivers, the living world (tropical rainforests and hot deserts) and hazards (earthquakes, volcanoes, tropical storms and climate change).
Paper 2 (Human): Urbanisation, resource management, the development gap and economic futures.
Paper 3 (Skills): Fieldwork and issue evaluation.

Qualification assessment overview

The Geography GCSE is 100% external assessment which takes place in May/June of Year 11.

Internal PPE’s take place once in Year 9 and twice in Years 10 & 11 to monitor progress, but pupils regularly complete practice questions in a variety of forms throughout KS4.

How can parents support their child and Sir Thomas Boughey with Geography?

In Geography pupils will need to back up their answers with case study information: pupils will find this easier if they watch the news and are aware of events that happen around the world. The AQA exam practise workbook and revision guide are a fantastic resource to help pupils with revision for exams and assessments.
